Miami’s largest street festival returns to Little Havana this Sunday for a day of music, heritage, and culture. The annual Calle Ocho Music Festival is the largest Hispanic festival in the country, celebrating Latin and Caribbean music and the emerging artists who are exploring new ways of bringing traditional music into the future. Here’s what to expect.
With an estimated crowd of over 1 million visitors, the Calle Ocho Fest isn’t only limited to 8th Street. The party and street vendors will span nearly 20 blocks of the Little Havana neighborhood and feature the hottest artists of the moment, food, and entertainment.
What do Pitbull, Nicky Jam, and Maluma all have in common? They all made their artistic debuts on the Calle Ocho stage. Latin music’s newest game changers will take one of the 10 stages for live performances of merengue, reggaeton, bachata, balada, hip hop, rap, and more. Traditional acts will include salsa in the streets, demos, lessons, and an entire stage dedicated to Central American artists, dance, and music.
"The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever." - Sonia Sotomayor
The street fare shines as much as the music during the Calle Ocho Fest, so come hungry. Latin American and Caribbean staples will be served street-style. Attend El Croquetazo, the world championship croqueta eating contest where contestants compete in a timed event to win cash prizes. The Little Havana festival wouldn’t be complete without Cubano Wars, where top chefs from Miami, Tampa, and abroad compete for the Best Cuban sandwich title. Don’t miss the tasty interpretations the contestants come up with.
The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. this Sunday between 8th and 27th avenues. Visit the official website for a full list of events, artists, and performance schedule. Entry is free and open to the public. Grab a VIP all-access pass to get backstage at the Miami Herald Stage, access to the VIP lounge, transportation between VIP stops, free parking, goodies, and more.
