Magical moments aside, some of us like to keep our sanity during the holidays. If you’re not the festive type, we’ve come up with alternative ways to celebrate December 25th that have nothing to do with Santa. From movies to chinese food, have a different kind of fun with our anti-holiday South Beach guide.

MatzoBall

If you’re single and ready to mingle (and Jewish), you won’t want to miss MatzoBall at LIV Nightclub, the nation’s leading Jewish singles event. Now in its 33rd year, the most “epic one-night-stand of the year” falls annually on December 24 and carries into the wee hours of December 25. Created decades ago as a big party where Jewish singles could socialize on a night where everything else is closed, MatzoBall is celebrated today in multiple cities across the US.

Eat Something Non-Turkey-Related

Chinese food is a solid choice come Christmas Day. In fact, it’s the busiest day for Chinese restaurants around the country. In part due to Jewish tradition and people too lazy to care about what they eat, but Chinese food is just extra tasty on Christmas Day (plus Chinese restaurants are always open). Sriracha House, Sum Yum Gai, and Fortune Cookies in South Beach are all within walking distance of Washington Park Hotel, and their quick counter service allows you to grab your meal with ample time to enjoy before our next stop.

Go to the Movies

No, not holiday-themed ones. Movie theaters are open on Christmas Day and show plenty of films that have nothing to do with the holiday season. Regal South Beach in Lincoln Road Mall will have big-budget Oscar contenders, but for something more memorable, catch a flick at O Cinema next door to Washington Park Hotel. The cutting-edge indie cinema specializes in independent, foreign, and art films and is housed in a beautiful European-inspired theater built in 1927.

Luminosa

Jungle Island transforms nightly into a fluorescent multicolored dreamworld during Luminosa, the amusement park’s interpretation of the Chinese Lantern Festival that dates back 2,000 years to the Eastern Han Dynasty. Watch nightly acrobat shows and marvel at a nighttime jungle filled with giant lanterns hand-crafted out of colorful silk by Chinese artisans and lit by over 1 million LED lights. Located on Watson Island, only a 10-minute car ride from WPH, Luminosa happens nightly from 5 - 10 p.m. (Fridays and Saturdays 5 - 11 p.m.) for a limited time.
